Ford Escape 2001–2026
Summary
- 26 model years in 4 generations, 29,474 owner complaints in total.
- Within their own generation, 2001, 2002, 2011, 2013 and 2017 drew the most complaints in the first three years.
- 2004, 2006, 2009, 2019 and 2023 drew the fewest complaints of their generation over the same span.
- These are complaint counts, not failure rates: they are not divided by how many cars were sold, because no public source reports U.S. sales by model year.
- Half of the complaints that give a mileage were filed by 78,000 miles (18,794 of them give one).
- Owners reported 831 crashes, 535 fires, 713 injuries and 17 deaths across these model years.
- 103 recalls and 25 federal investigations cover these model years; 2 investigations are still open.

A model year gets its own page when four sources cover it, it holds at least 50 complaints, and it either compares with the other years of its generation or shows one system in 40% or more of the complaints that name a component. The rest are listed here with their figures.

Owner report I have a 2019 Ford Escape. With the EcoBoost 1.5-liter engine. The engine has a well-documented engineering defect that causes coolant intrusion into the cylinders. And ultimately engine failure. Ford created a customer assistance program to deal with this. Its limits are seven years and 84,000 miles. My vehicle is 7 1…

Owner report I was driving to work and the transmission faltered, grinded, tried to shift, and I thought the vehicle was going to crash. There were cars around me, and I was going about 30 to 35 miles per hour. I was able to pull over and turned off the car. I then drove it to an auto shop and the mechanic stated that it is the tra…
Owner report Engaging & disengaging while parked and turned off. Lost of power while driving. Check engine light & wrench came on. Tried to get dealer to diagnose but they didn’t understand me with the engaging. Taking on dealer today’s for both issues. It went from about 50 mph to 25 mph
Steering
Owner report The steering wheel assist failed when I turned the car on to leave work. I had to get it towed to a car repair shop and they told me the entire steering rack had to be replaced because the assist is built into the rack.

Service bulletins
Ford issued 3,144 service bulletins covering these model years, most often about electrical system.
A bulletin tells dealers how to fix a known condition. It is not a recall and not a defect finding. Most bulletins cover several model years at once, so a bulletin listed here may not be specific to one year. The number of bulletins tracks how long and how widely a model was sold, so it is not a measure of reliability.

How to read this page
Complaint counts are not failure rates. A model that sells more cars draws more complaints, and owners file more after news coverage or a recall. That is why years are compared only with other years of the same generation, over the same span, and never with other models.
