Ford recalls 1.39 million 2015–2017 F-150s for sudden downshifts
The fix is a free software update, and a new lead frame for trucks that have logged the fault. Owner complaints about the downshift rose sharply in the two years before the recall.
What the recall covers
Ford filed recall 26V237 on April 14, 2026, for 1,392,935 F-150 pickups from the 2015, 2016 and 2017 model years with the six-speed 6R80 automatic, built from March 2014 to August 2017 (Part 573 report, 26V237). Heat cycles and vibration can degrade connections in the transmission's lead frame, the wiring assembly inside the gearbox that carries the range sensor's signal, so the engine computer briefly reads a wrong gear-selector position and shifts from sixth gear to second. At highway speed the rear wheels can skid.
The remedy is a free powertrain control module update. Trucks that have already stored the related fault codes also get a new lead frame under an extended warranty program. Ford estimates about 1% of the trucks carry the defect, but the trucks were not built in VIN order, so every owner in the range has to check. 2017 F-150s with the ten-speed 10R80 are not included.
How the recall came about
The recall followed NHTSA's engineering analysis EA26-001, opened in January 2026 after a preliminary evaluation in March 2025 (NHTSA investigation document, EA26-001). The analysis is still open; our article on EA26-001 explains why. Ford's own chronology counts 891 vehicles behind the reports it gathered and one possibly related crash with two injuries.
What owners reported
We counted 844 owner complaints for 2015–2017 F-150s that describe a downshift or rear-wheel lockup in the owner's words, as the federal file stood on September 21, 2026. They ran at one to three dozen a year until 2023, then 97 in 2024, 211 in 2025 and 136 in the first three and a half months of 2026, before the recall. The median stated mileage is about 92,000 miles, which fits the cause Ford gave: wear from years of heat and vibration, not a fault present from new. The pattern puts the risk in older, high-mileage trucks, and every truck in this recall is now nine to twelve years old.
What to do if you own one
Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup and have the update done. Until then, leave more room ahead and be gentle on wet or icy roads; if the truck downshifts on its own, keep both hands on the wheel and pull over when safe. When parked on a slope, use the parking brake. The 2015, 2016 and 2017 F-150 pages carry each year's record, and our F-150 downshift guide covers the background, including the older 2011–2013 recalls.
